The concrete industry has embraced innovation and ensured high levels of long-term performance and sustainability through creative applications in design and construction. As a construction material, the versatility of concrete and its intrinsic benefits mean it is still well placed to meet challenges of the construction industry. Indeed, concrete has kept evolving to satisfy ever more stringent, as well as demanding design requirements and calls to improve the performance. This has been achieved through the introduction of new constituent materials, technologies and construction methods.
The current challenges faced by concrete construction may not necessarily be the same as those in the future. However, an ongoing programme of innovation and product development means that concrete should continue to provide cost effective sustainable solutions that are able to turn a challenge into an opportunity.
This book is a collection of papers presented at the International Conference on Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation (Kingston-upon-Thames, UK, 9–10 September 2008). Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation deals with recent innovation in concrete science, technology and practice, and discusses challenges from new materials, technologies,
environmental concerns and economic factors in maintaining concrete construction excellence. The book will be of interest to engineers, designers, researchers and scientists.

Summary:

It must be appreciated that no building surface is perfectly flat and that the best that can be expected is the appearance of flatness. Unfortunately, this appearance can easily be destroyed by the effect of glancing light, whether natural or artificial. Illumination and Decoration of Flat Surfaces shows the effect of different light sources on a variety of lining materials and paints so that best effects can be achieved. Different types of building surfaces are investigated, including set plaster, fibrous plaster, hardboard and gypsum board with gloss and semi-gloss paint applied. This full-color edition also discusses new building materials such as cement sheet, polystyrene and various composite panels, as well as new building practices, low embodied energy materials and higher energy efficiency of buildings. Illumination and Decoration of Flat Surfaces is a must-have for people involved in the building industry, both commercial and residential.

GD
Summary: A LIRE ABSOLUMENTRating: 5

An Oxford Companion to The Romantic Age
An Oxford Companion to The Romantic Age: British Culture 1776-1832 Summary:
By Iain McCalman, Jon Mee, Gillian Russell, Clara Tuite, Kate Fullagar, Patsy Hardy
- Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
- Number Of Pages: 800
- Publication Date: 2001-09-06
- ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0199245436
- ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780199245437
For the first time, this innovative reference book surveys the Romantic Age through all aspects of British culture, rather than in literary or artistic terms alone. This multi-disciplinary approach treats Romanticism both in aesthetic terms--its meaning for painting, music, design, architecture, and literature--and as a historical epoch of "revolutionary" transformations which ushered in modern democratic and industrialized society.
Summary: A treasure trove
Rating: 5
I second everything covered in Mr Clarke's review. This volume is an absolute feast, beautifully illustrated, and with its unusual organization into two well-linked sections, remarkably usable. It can be read cover-to-cover for the fasinating long essays that place each author's point-of-view within the broader academic debates and for the entertaining but informative shorter entries. But it's also a terrific encyclopedia-style reference manual which I refer to often, with rich further references on most topics. A model of imaginative clarity.
Summary: A Real Feast of a BookRating: 5
This Oxford Companion is one of the most engrossing of all reference works. The book is divided into two hefty sections. The first contains 41 substantial essays on general themes of the era, such as "Revolution," "Industrialization," and "Empire." The essays are written by leading scholars including Jerome McGann, and each essay is concluded with a brief bibliography, which is a great aid to research. Moreover, the essays are fully indexed. This in itself would be a great read, but it's only half the book. The second section of the Companion is a 375-page encyclopedia containing short articles on a whole range of significant contributors to European romanticism, as well as longer articles on the period's various genres, movements, events, and minor themes. What's more, the two sections of the book are fully cross-referenced, and the book is well illustrated throughout. This Companion should be on the "Recommended Reading" list for every undergraduate Romantic-era history or literature course. Not only that, it should be read, as well! A challenging, often provocative, always insightful survey of the great sweep ofBritish culture in the Romantic age.

Integral and Semi-Integral Bridges
Integral and Semi-Integral Bridges Summary:
By Martin P Burke Jr
- Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell
- Number Of Pages: 272

- ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1405194189
- ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781405194181
Worldwide, integral type bridges are being used in greater numbers in lieu of jointed bridges because of their structural simplicity, first-cost economy, and outstanding durability. In the UK and the US states of Tennessee and Missouri, for example, the construction of most moderate lengthbridges is based on the integral bridge concept. The state of Washington uses semi-integral bridges almost exclusively, while, depending on subfoundation characteristics, the state of Ohio and others use a mix of these two bridge types.
Integral and Semi-Integral Bridges has been written by a practicing bridge design engineer who has spent his entire career involved in the origination, evaluation and design of suchbridges in the USA, where they have been in use since the late 1930’s. This work shows how the analytical complexity due to the elimination of movable joints can be minimized to negligible levels so that most moderate lengthbridges can be easily and quickly modified or replaced with either integral or semi-integral bridges.
Bridge design, construction, and maintenance engineers; bridge design administrators; graduate level engineering students and structural research professionals will all find this book exceptionally informative for a wide range of highway bridge applications.

- Number Of Pages: 272
- Publication Date: 2009-06-29
- ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1405111798
- ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781405111799
This book covers partnerships in the broadest sense, presenting a critical account of the whole range of partnerships in property development.
The emphasis is on the relationship between developers and landowners, developers and funders, and the provision of public services through the use of private finance.
The authors draw on their own professional experience of running property partnerships and, with carefully researched case studies, present the 'insider' view, making a potentially dry and complex subject accessible and lively.
The book moves beyond a theoretical overview and, by illuminating the reality of property partnerships shows for example, exactly how the government is procuring schools, hospitals and roads.
This clear and objective analysis sets property partnerships in their economic and political contexts and will be of topical interest to surveyors and developers - in both private practice and local authorities - as well as to funders. Students in surveying, estate management and real estate development will also find this a concise and authoritative guide.

Calcul des structures en bois
Calcul des structures en bois Summary:
By Yves Benoit, Bernard Legrand, Vincent Tastet
