Tant d'ouvrages ont été écrits sur l'un des trois sujets abordés ici qu'il était difficile de publier quelque-chose d'intéressant et d'utile ! C'est pourtant le cas de ce guide : - il lie ENFIN les problèmes d'isolation, de chauffage et de ventilation, - il explique clairement les mécanismes et les enjeux croisés de ces thèmes et ne se contente pas de faire l'apologie de telle ou telle technique ou matériaux écolo à la mode ! - il ne s'adresse pas seulement aux spécialistes mais permet au débutant de se créer une réelle culture éconologique sur l'amélioration de son habitat, - il sait se démarquer et être critique sur certains procédés à la mode qui ne présentent pas que des avantages (Puits canadien ou VMC double-flux par exemple) ; il s'intéresse autant aux principes qu'aux produits, - Enfin, c'est un des moins cher de son secteur ce qui le rend accessible à tous. En tant que professionnel en Eco-habitat sain, je ne peux que le recommander à tous ceux qui s'intéressent au sujet. Il vaut en effet largement quelques-autres qui sont plus des catalogues de produits souvent très onéreux. Il insiste sur les solutions simples à mettre en place (c'est l'air qui le meilleur et le moins cher des isolants), locales et accessibles à toutes les bourses !

A cette époque où nous devons faire des économies d'énergie, le livre de PAUL DE HAUT, est sans aucun doute une référence.
Nous y trouvons mille idées pour réduire nos dépenses de chauffage, en passant par le chauffe-eau solaire - comment avoir de l'eau chaude gratuitement - les pompes à chaleur géothermiques ou non, l'isolation , et la ventilaton que l'on oublie trop souvent, etc..., mille idées tout à fait réalisables, économiques et très écologiques.
A lire absolument pour la construction ou la rénovation de votre maison.

C'est exactement le guide qu'il me fallait, complet, clair, pratique !!!
Je vais pouvoir maintenant traiter les economies d'énergies de façon globale et complète alors que jusqu'à présent cela ne m'était pas apparu comme évident : chauffage, isolation, ventilation, il s'agit bien du même problème. Les astuces concernant notamment le chauffage au bois sont aussi évidentes que l'oeuf de Christophe Colomb. Un grand bravo !

This Oxford Companion is one of the most engrossing of all reference works. The book is divided into two hefty sections. The first contains 41 substantial essays on general themes of the era, such as "Revolution," "Industrialization," and "Empire." The essays are written by leading scholars including Jerome McGann, and each essay is concluded with a brief bibliography, which is a great aid to research. Moreover, the essays are fully indexed. This in itself would be a great read, but it's only half the book. The second section of the Companion is a 375-page encyclopedia containing short articles on a whole range of significant contributors to European romanticism, as well as longer articles on the period's various genres, movements, events, and minor themes. What's more, the two sections of the book are fully cross-referenced, and the book is well illustrated throughout. This Companion should be on the "Recommended Reading" list for every undergraduate Romantic-era history or literature course. Not only that, it should be read, as well! A challenging, often provocative, always insightful survey of the great sweep ofBritish culture in the Romantic age.

Afin d'harmoniser les règles de conception des structures en bois entre les états membres de l'Union européenne, les règles de calcul ont été unifiées avec la publication de l'eurocode 5. La norme européenne est composée de trois parties : les règles générales, le calcul des structures au feu pour les bâtiments et le calcul des ponts et des passerelles. Chaque document est accompagné d'une Annexe nationale. Comprendre les changements par rapport aux Règles CB 71. L'application de l'eurocode 5 doit passer par une période de recouvrement avec les Règles CB 71 - qui a débuté mi 2007 pour une durée de 1 à 3 ans. Cette échéance proche souligne l'urgence de la formation des professionnels pour comprendre les fondements et les principes de la norme. Les conséquences opérationnelles du passage à l'eurocode 5 sont complexes et impliquent, pour les acteurs de la filière bois, l'appropriation approfondie de ces nouvelles règles pour appliquer correctement les nouvelles méthodes de calcul des structures en bois. L'objectif de la conception des structures est d'atteindre une faible probabilité de rupture de la matière. Appliquer les nouvelles méthodes de calcul. Le principe de justification d'une structure soumise à des charges repose sur deux critères : la vérification de la résistance (ELU) et la vérification de la déformation (ELS). Les états limites ultimes sont associés aux différentes formes de défaillance structurale, et visent à assurer la sécurité des personnes et des biens. Les états limites de service correspondent à des conditions de fonctionnement des ouvrages et de confort des usagers au-delà desquelles les exigences d'aptitude au service ne sont plus satisfaites. L'objectif est donc d'assurer le confort des personnes et de limiter les déformations du bâtiment. L'état limite de service n'est plus respecté lorsque les déformations maximales sont dépassées. Chapitre 1 - Aborder l'eurocode 5 présente les éléments des eurocodes 0 et 1 nécessaires à l'application des règles de l'eurocode 5, et précise les nouvelles valeurs des résistances du bois. Des graphiques aident à visualiser les principales différences entre une justification du critère sécurité des Règles CB 71 (charpentes bois) et des états limites ultimes de l'eurocode 5. Chapitre 2 - Vérifier les sections étudie l'ensemble des sollicitations de la plus simple à la plus complexe, c'est-à-dire de la traction à la flexion déviée avec compression et risque de flambage. Ces sollicitations sont exposées pour les poutres droites, mais également pour les poutres courbes et à inertie variable. Les différents critères d'instabilité -flambement et déversement - y sont largement décrits. Chapitre 3 -Vérifier les assemblages constitue le chapitre le plus détaillé de l'ouvrage. La méthode de justification des embrèvements et des tenons-mortaises est décrite dans le détail avant d'aborder les assemblages par tiges, tels que les pointes, agrafes, boulons, broches et tire-fond, avec les possibilités de renforts, crampons et anneaux. Ce chapitre explique clairement un changement important par rapport aux Règles CB 71 : le calcul des risques de rupture de bloc et de rupture par fendage. Chapitre 4 - Composant et assembleur propose la justification de sous-ensembles comme un mur à ossature bois de type plate-forme et une couronne de boulons. Chapitre 5 - Tableaux de synthèse constitue un dossier technique qui rassemble l'ensemble des données nécessaires à la justification à l'eurocode 5. I bought this book for an independent study course in wood design while obtaining a MS in Civil Engineering. The book is well organized, does an excellent job of explaining the hows and whys ofwood design and provides excellent design examples. I would highly recommend it. To get the most of this book, you should also have a copy of the IBC, ASCE 7, and the Wood Council codes.

This book is gives a good grasp of seismic design for wood structures. Many of the examples especially near the end are good practice for the Californa PE Special Seismic Exam design questions. It gives a good grasp of how seismic forces move through a building and how to calculate those forces at various locations.

The traditional method of building a building was to have the owner contract with a designer, and subsequently to contract with a builder to do the actualconstruction . The problem comes from the fact that there was often confusted communications between the designer and the builder. Of course the designer and the builder had differing agendas, they each had different capabilities, different jobs. The result was unhappiness, if not law suits. One answer to this conflict was the concept of using one contractor to both design and build the building. The result has been a 6% lower cost, and 12% faster (33% faster if design time is included) than design-bid-build projects. This book is a survey of design-build from his history, a description of how it works, a report on numerous projects from the real world, legal/insurance/contract information, off shore design, new advances in technology such as RFID and GPS. [ This Review originally appeared in The Englewood Review of Books ] Belonging to a church community that has been rooted in one place in Indianapolis for over one hundred years, it is almost daily evident what William Faulkner had in mind when writing, "The past is never dead. It's not even past." Stories are told and retold through the lens of our particular place and people, tied in many ways to a larger context of geography. Through these acts of remembering, attached to a specific place, we participate in developing - albeit not as intentionally - as whatRandall Mason calls a "memory infrastructure." Mason's new book The Once and Future New York: Historic Preservation and the Modern City explores the roots of modern historic preservation back to the decades around 1900, suggesting that the creation of this memory infrastructure is the impetus for preservation: Memory sites were not an end in themselves. They were envisioned as means
to an end - a way to reform urban society and shape civic identity by
exposing citizens to a memory-rich environment. Reformers and civic
leaders sought stability to counter the gathering sense of cultural
dislocation and the loss of memory in this period, and historical memory
lent this appearance of stability to culture (239). Focusing on the histories of three locations in New York - St. John's Chapel, City Hall Park, and the Bronx River Parkway - Mason establishes preservation as a discipline with a history of its own, and one tied in many ways to supporting the furtherdevelopment of cities: "[Preservationists] lobbied not against development but for a different kind of development : not to halt change, but to modify or design it, to produce a `Greater New York' at once more beautiful, more efficient, and more clearly rooted in its own past" (xv). The ways in which the "memoryinfrastructure " is developed in each case study is telling of the complexities with which preservation is practiced. The study of St. John's Chapel typifies the tenuous versions of memory and history that arise in preservation, as well as providing a context within the larger neighborhood and citydevelopment . St. John's Chapel was built in 1807, closed in 1909 and demolished in 1918. Along the way the Vestry of Trinity Church, owner of the chapel who ordered the closing, is seen to embody one version of history anddevelopment ; the congregation of St. John's lives out another memory of the place; and later, preservationists and architects value the location for yet another history. Beginning with the active congregation's "traditional collective memory, characterized by continuities through time and space, a local and spatially bounded orientation, and strong religious values," after the Chapel was closed for many years, preservationists attached a "modern historical memory...abstracted from the historical experience of the site, metropolitan, and secular in character" (119). This shift in the remembering of St. John's Chapel "transformed [it] from a site of memory to a totem of history. As a historical memory, it was an artifact that managed only to be a weak link in the memoryinfrastructure" (115). In effect, the construction of "historical memory" may function in ways markedly different than original uses; as the redevelopment of our own neighborhood is underway, questions about how "memoryinfrastructure " is formed from within the community could be very helpful to sustain cohesion throughout time. City Hall Park is developed and preserved in some significantly different ways than St. John's; the park dates back nearly to colonial times, and City Hall itself was opened in 1811. In the following century, two buildings were constructed on the site of the park, both opposed to public opinion, and through many more decades, both were demolished, and the park returned to its "natural" state. Similarly, The Bronx River Parkway is developed as a "project integrating several kinds ofinfrastructure - transportation, public health, recreational, social, economic, administrative...The parkway embodied all the facets of `improvement' that were the proudest achievements of Progressive reformers" (177). As with St. John's, though, the Parkway leveled several neighborhoods to make way for a roadway, parks, and the grading of the river; Mason considers both forms of remembering throughout these projects - that of the local memory and the civic history, focusing on the latter in the scope of this book, although not without providing many voices from those whose memory did not survive the "civic patriotism" encouraged by preservation. Considering the roots ofhistoric preservation as we know it is helpful for considering neighborhood development in any city, not just these examples from New York. The ways in which communities may be participating within their own "memoryinfrastructure" could be a useful conversation for preservation of a place alongside development projects. Given the example of St. John's Chapel, I also wonder how congregations function within their setting, and to what degree a telling of alternative narratives, namely the Kingdom of God, can continue to break through "civic memory." Distinguishing between a rooted local memory that is "a process animated by people" and civic memory "constructed...an artifact" (115) may be the place to begin for preserving these narratives. As churches participate within the life of a neighborhood, sustaining local memory as a major part ofdevelopment could preserve the particularities of any given place, and create stability that is truly rooted in its place. The Once and Future New York's telling narratives that link historical preservation, versions of history, and social reform is significant for our own participation as communities.

We all know that information revolution has totally transformed the society. Architecture is no exception. Relative to industrial revolution's impact on architecture, "what has this recent revolution done to the field?" is the basic inquiry to the book. This book diligently answers to the question. It is extremely informative and provocative regardingdigital technologies available for architecture . As an outcome of a symposium held at U.Penn. in 2002, the book compiles various scholars and practitioners around the world. They grapple with the current technologies available to design and manufacture innovative shapes/forms/spaces that associate withdigital aesthetics. Spearheaded researchers such as Bill Mitchell(MIT), Chris Luebkeman(Arup), Ali Rahim (U.Penn), and Branko Kolarevic (U.Penn, chief editor of the book); and, cutting-edge practitioners such as Jim Glymph (Gehry), Hugh Whitehead (Foster & Partners), Bernhard Franken (Franken Architekten), etc.; both groups provide theoretical framework and actual applications. It's interesting to point out that the authors deliberately associateddigital architecture with smooth forms. Double curvatures deform structure/ skin/ space of the building. El Tajín, an ancient Mesoamerican capital in Veracruz, Mexico, has long been admired for its stunning pyramids and ballcourts decorated with extensive sculptural programs. Yet the city's singularity as the only center in the region with such a wealth of sculpture and fine architecture has hindered attempts to place it more firmly in the context of Mesoamerican history. In Lightning Gods and Feathered Serpents, Rex Koontz undertakes the first extensive treatment of El Tajín's iconography in over thirty years, allowing us to view its imagery in the broader Mesoamerican context of rising capitals and new elites during a period of fundamental historical transformations.

Koontz focuses on three major architectural features--the Pyramid of the Niches/Central Plaza ensemble, the South Ballcourt, and the Mound of the Building Columns complex--and investigates the meanings of their sculpture and how these meanings would have been experienced by specific audiences. Koontz finds that the iconography of El Tajín reveals much about how motifs and elite rites growing out of the Classic period were transmitted to later Mesoamerican peoples as the cultures centered on Teotihuacan and the Maya became the myriad city-states of the Early Postclassic period.

By reexamining the iconography of sculptures long in the record, as well as introducing important new monuments and contexts, Lightning Gods and Feathered Serpents clearly demonstrates El Tajín's numerous iconographic connections with other areas of Mesoamerica, while also exploring its roots in an indigenous Gulf lowlands culture whose outlines are only now emerging. At the same time, it begins to uncover a largely ignored regional artistic culture of which Tajín is the crowning achievement.

The concept of sustainable packaging has seen some hype in the past few years, especially since the introduction of biopolymers. But, sustainable packaging is not only about materials,it is much more about design that encompasses all aspects of packaging, its functionality, its aesthetic quality, and its life cycle. This book looks at packaging from all angles. It will be very appreciated by anyone who has an interest or a stake in packaging. It is obvious how much thought went into it. It should be used as a reference for packaging professionals.
